How eBay fees work

In the US, eBay's main charge is the final value fee: a percentage of the whole order, including the shipping the buyer paid and the sales tax eBay collected. That catches people out. A $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% tax is charged on about $62, not $50. On top of that there's a small per-order fee.

In the UK it depends who you are. Private sellers have paid no selling fees since 2024; the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee instead, so a £30 sale pays out £30. Business sellers pay a category rate, a per-order fee and a small regulatory operating fee, all plus VAT if you aren't VAT registered.

Keeping more of each eBay sale

  • Promoted Listings are the fee most sellers forget. A 5% ad rate on a 13.6% category means about a fifth of the sale goes to eBay when the ad wins.
  • Shipping counts towards fees in the US, so over-charging for postage costs you twice: fewer sales and a higher fee.
  • Top Rated Plus knocks 10% off the percentage part of the fee. It doesn't touch the per-order fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does eBay take from a $50 sale in the US?

$7.20 with no shipping and default settings, about 14.4% of the sale. You'd be paid $42.80 before your item and postage costs.

How much does eBay take from a £50 sale in the UK?

Nothing. On a £50 sale you receive the full £50. The buyer pays about £2.70 in fees on top.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

In the US, yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total sale, including the shipping the buyer paid and any sales tax. UK business sellers are also charged on price plus postage. UK private sellers pay no final value fee at all.

Do UK private sellers pay eBay fees?

Not on most sales. Since 2024 private sellers in the UK pay no final value fee or regulatory fee; the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top of the price instead. You may pay an international fee if the buyer is abroad and you don't use eBay International Shipping.
